The World Health Organisation (WHO) shows that the number of people aged 60 years and over in the population is increasing. In 2019, the number stood at 1 billion, but this is estimated to increase to 1.4 billion by 2030 and 2.1 billion by 2050.
Mental health problems in older people are increasingly becoming recognised as a major health issue by the NHS. It has been demonstrated that there are significant differences in mental health problems in older adults compared to the younger population, meaning that there is a great need for specialised professionals to manage these problems effectively
