Psychiatry-UK cares deeply about delivering high-quality care to its patients, and about transparency and honesty in its practices.

After receiving a patient complaint in August 2022, we were concerned to discover that a locum consultant psychiatrist (“the Consultant”) was undertaking ADHD assessments that were below our organisation’s usual high standards and they were dismissed.

We promptly identified all patients who had been assessed by this Consultant, clinically reviewed their care, and completed a process to ensure that all patients are safe. We are in the process of contacting all patients that were under the Consultant’s care, advising them of the situation, offering support, if needed, and to provide every one of them an opportunity to give us feedback. We have not found that any patient has suffered any harm as a result of the Consultant’s poor service. Those requiring further assessment or treatment have had a new consultant allocated.

We have communicated with the Care Quality Commission (CQC), General Medical Council (GMC) and the Consultant’s responsible medical officer at their Designated Body and are in communication with relevant NHS commissioning bodies about the incident and our ongoing actions.

We would like to apologise again to all affected patients and thank them for their patience and understanding. As an organisation that has high-quality care at the heart of its values, we have learned from this incident.

To prevent such an incident happening again we have assessed and improved our internal processes of monitoring, audit, and clinical quality assurance, ensuring that in the future our patients remain assured of the quality of the care we provide.

If you have received a letter informing you that you were treated by this Consultant, we hope that the actions we have taken as described above will reassure you that there is no cause for concern.
